If your fixed or tracker deal is ending, doing nothing is usually the most expensive option. When a deal ends, most lenders move you onto their Standard Variable Rate (SVR), which is typically much higher.
Start looking around 6 months before your deal ends
Many lenders let you secure a new rate up to six months in advance. If rates fall before your deal ends, a good broker can often switch you to a better rate before completion.
Product transfer or full remortgage?
- Product transfer: staying with your current lender on a new deal. Quick, usually no legal work or new affordability checks.
- Remortgage: moving to a new lender. Can unlock better rates, borrowing extra, or changing the term — and often comes with free legal work and valuation.
We compare both. Sometimes your existing lender really is best; often it isn't. Read the full product transfer vs remortgage comparison.
Good reasons to remortgage
- Your current deal is ending
- Your home has gone up in value, moving you into a lower loan-to-value band with cheaper rates
- You want to borrow more for home improvements
- You want to remove someone from the mortgage, or add someone
- You want to overpay more flexibly or change your term
Costs to check
- Early repayment charges if you leave a deal early
- Arrangement / product fees (compare the total cost, not just the rate)
- Exit fees from your current lender
